An encouragement/reminder for Kirk Cameron

Posted by Gary on March 6, 2012

I wanted to take a moment today in the midst of all the furor to encourage my brother Kirk Cameron (no, we’ve never met). I am grateful for the faithfulness to God’s truth Kirk demonstrated during his recent interview with Piers Morgan. It takes faith and the courage faith produces to speak truth in these days as America becomes Sodom.

During the interview Kirk called sodomy “unnatural” and as we know, he is being attacked for it. The question is, why did Kirk choose the word “unnatural”? Was this his own thought? Just his opinion? No, in his answer Kirk wisely chose to use one of the words that God’s Word ascribes to sodomy, the word “unnatural”:

Romans 1:26-27 “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”

I have posted on this previously but let me just state it briefly again in the form of a question…”If sodomy is natural, why does it result in disease and death?” Here’s another, “Why does sodomy have to be practiced safely, why is it not safe “naturally” like monogamous, heterosexual sex?” One last one, “If sodomy is natural why would it lead to the extinction of the human race if it was adopted wholesale?”

Kirk, your Christian brothers and sisters are grateful for your faithfulness to God and your willingness to bear the scorn that comes from belonging to Christ.

Now my reminder for Kirk. Brother, don’t forget that ultimately it’s not you they hate, it is your Savior. I am sure you know these verses but it never hurts to be reminded:

John 15:18-21 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. “But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.”

Kirk, as the world scoffs at your choice of the word “unnatural” to describe sodomy, just remember it is God they are scoffing at for He said it and you were only bearing His message. As they jeer and hold you in contempt, they are ultimately jeering at Christ and holding Him in their contempt. In their rage against you, they are really raging against God (as much as many of them would deny it). Remember brother, it’s not you they hate ultimately, it’s God but by His grace we are glad to be hated for Him.I know you know these things but in the heat of the battle we need to be reminded.

One last encouragement from our Lord:

Matthew 5:10-12 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Lord, please grant us your presence and grace to keep us faithful to you as the evil day draws near. Apart from You we can do nothing but with You we can be faithful, loving and bold. Please grant it for the sake of Your Name. Amen.

I would’ve been very disappointed if Cameron didn’t express his own sinful nature. In general, modern evangelical Christians in the media need to express more humility when dealing with this issue. There’s far too little Christians in the media preaching against pornography, which is RAMPANT amongst both men and women in the world. Sexual sin is sexual sin… gay or straight, we need to approach it as equally offensive to God.

      Dear Dave,
Thanks for coming by and for your thoughts. I think you are right about about pornography and I would add, sex outside of marriage. Both of these are also sinful and as heterosexual Christians we seem to turn our heads (to our own sin as well as the sins of others).

You made a statement that sexual sin is sexual sin and that we need to approach it equally. I agree to a great degree as long as we understand that all sin is not equally sinful to God, there are degrees of sin. A one dollar bill can be called currency as rightly as a one hundred dollar bill but if you give me my choice between them, I will take the one hundred. Sin is sin but there are degrees of sin just as there are degrees of currency. I believe that the Bible teaches that sodomy is a “greater” offense for it it crosses more of God’s boundaries than heterosexual sexual sin. Don’t mishear me, there is no safe ground to stand on when we are sinning. But Romans 1 and God’s deliberate actions in regard to Sodom are instructive.

      Thanks brother.

Thank you for sharing this Pastor. I pray in agreement with you:

Lord, please grant us your presence and grace to keep us faithful to you as the evil day draws near. Apart from You we can do nothing but with You we can be faithful, loving and bold. Please grant it for the sake of Your Name. Amen.

And offer prayers for Kirk and his family.

      Dear Dawn,

Thank you for your thoughts and your prayers, we all need them. We always want Christians to be bold when talking on television but I am afraid we do not know the level of help a person needs from God to be faithful and courageous with many eyes and ears upon them. Many would like to tell themselves that they would say this or say that but I wonder how many would tuck their tails and play the coward when the camera light went on?

      Love in Christ, Gary

Speaking of Kirk Cameron… let’s review:
    1. Became ‘born again’ evangelical at age 17.
    2. Remained a virgin until at the age of 20, he married a very beautiful wife and co-actress, in 1991.
    3. Has gone on record touting that homosexuality is ‘unnatural’.
    4. Has six children… four adopted and two biological.

Now I pose to you and your audience the following questions.

    1. How ‘natural’ is it for Christians to marry as virgins and then WAIT A DECADE to ‘have children’ of their own?

    2. If Kirk Cameron was engaged in a ‘blessed marriage’ since it was heterosexual… then WHY WAS IT NOT BLESSED WITH ‘natural offspring’ in the first ten years of marriage?

    3. Could Kirk Cameron’s ‘innocence’ as a ‘virgin’ have lead to him NOT KNOWING HOW TO HAVE HETEROSEXUAL SEX? Or more explicitly, was he in fact ‘doing it wrong’ for ten years? Or was it that for a decade, he chose to ‘defy his god’ and deliberately refused to bring his own children into the world, by taking measures to NEGATE that ‘blessing of marriage’ to manifest in his own marriage?

    4. Or… could the decade of ‘fruitlessness’ in Kirk Cameron’s ‘sanctified marriage’ been a punishment?

    5. Ultimately… as far as ‘civilizations welfare is concerned’… how truly different were the first ten years of Kirk Cameron’s fruitless heterosexual marriage, a period in which time he adopted children born of the actions of other couples… from a fruitless marriage between a couple of the same gender, who likewise adopt children born from the actions other couples?
