Heights fallen from

Posted by Gary on November 26, 2009

Visiting BaylyBlog today I read a comparison between President Obama’s 2009 Thanksgiving proclamation and President Bush’s 2008 proclamation. Bush’s mentions God often in ways of reverence and humility. Obama, while giving God His mention ultimately dwells upon us.

This led me to the website that lists all the proclamations from past presidents and I came across Abraham Lincoln’s from 1863. It includes statements that boggle the mind in light of today’s false claim by America to believe in and revere God. Note words and concepts that he uses that a president today would never use nor would be tolerated by Americans who in the main do not believe in the God of the Bible but only give the words of lips which will never pass the bar of judgment for real faith:

“No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore if, as soon as may be consistent with the divine purpose, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this 3d day of October A.D. 1863, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

Amazing. According to Lincoln America was being dealt with for sins, which he minces no words about calling it, “national perverseness”. Lincoln also believes that God is angry with America! Angry? I thought God couldn’t live without us and only has gifts and blessings for us? Has there been a president since Lincoln that has reminded us that God may be angry with us?

God is plainly and unapologetically referred to as a “Father”. Of course the Godless think this is the very problem with the God of the Bible, that He is male, and a father, and therefore overly harsh. If only God were a woman things would be well.

Did Lincoln actually call us to penitence? Does he really mean we should be sorry for our sins? Do we even believe that there is such a thing as sin? These are our lives aren’t they? We can do what we want with them right?

No president or man is perfect but we have fallen into the depths with President Obama. How unlike Lincoln he is. I wonder often what men like Lincoln and Washington would have said and done to the leaders we have suffered under in recent generations most of whom know not God and are in truth His enemies while all the while they pour forth words and go through forms pretending reverence toward Him.

Many of today’s politicians and President Obama are masters at saying things about God appearing to revere Him when their policies could not be more oppositional to Him. Be sure of this, we are living in the days of America’s unraveling.  Our hope is not to be found in economic recovery but in repentance.

Psalm 2:10-12  “Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”
